Foothill Ranch Personal Injury Lawyer

Foothill Ranch is the master-planned neighborhood in the northeast corner of Lake Forest, with its own ZIP code, 92610. It was finished in 1996, was a separate census area with 10,899 residents in 2000, and was annexed into the City of Lake Forest that same year. It covers about 2.8 square miles. It’s also a business address: Oakley’s headquarters is here, and companies such as Kaiser Aluminum and Kawasaki have offices in the neighborhood.

If you were injured here, a Foothill Ranch personal injury lawyer can help you figure out which agency has your report, deal with the insurance companies and keep track of deadlines. Our Lake Forest office on Lambert Street is about 4.7 miles away in a straight line. For citywide information, see our Lake Forest personal injury lawyer page. This page focuses on the roads, trails and procedures specific to Foothill Ranch.

The Roads That Shape Foothill Ranch

  • Portola Parkway runs through the neighborhood past the Whiting Ranch trailhead, and it has its own interchange with the 241.
  • The 241 Foothill Toll Road runs along the neighborhood, with Lake Forest exits at Portola Parkway, Lake Forest Drive and Alton Parkway. Drivers leaving the toll road go from freeway speeds straight onto signal-controlled city streets.
  • Lake Forest Drive and Alton Parkway link Foothill Ranch with the rest of Lake Forest and with Irvine.

Whiting Ranch and Trail Injuries

Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park, run by OC Parks, has its Borrego trailhead parking at 26701 Portola Parkway. The park covers about 2,500 acres, with 23 trails totaling about 17 miles for hikers, mountain bikers and horseback riders. OC Parks reserves the Red Rock Canyon and Billy Goat trails for hikers only, and trails can close for up to three days after rain.

Most trail falls are nobody’s fault. But some injuries do involve another person or a property owner, for example a collision with a rider going too fast, an unsafe condition in a parking lot, or a crash while crossing Portola Parkway to reach the trailhead. Claims involving a public park or road can have a six-month deadline for a written claim, so it helps to get advice early. Who Takes the Report in Foothill Ranch

Because Foothill Ranch is part of Lake Forest, crashes on its streets are handled by Lake Forest Police Services, which the city contracts from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. The city says those services include traffic enforcement and accident investigation.

  • Lake Forest Police Services: 100 Civic Center Dr, Lake Forest, CA 92630. Phone (949) 461-3530.

Getting a Sheriff’s report. The Sheriff’s Records unit asks you to call (714) 834-6454 first to confirm the report is ready. It says reports usually take 7 to 10 days to be finalized. Traffic collision reports go to the people involved, such as drivers, injured people, vehicle owners and their attorneys. The Sheriff’s posted fee is 15 cents per page.

Getting a CHP report. Use the CHP’s online crash report request or form CHP 190. The fee is $10 for 1 to 25 pages.

A claim against a public agency, such as a city, the county or a park operator, usually requires a written claim within six months. See the statute of limitations for car accidents in California.

Your Accident Doesn’t Have to Be Major to Matter

A fender-bender at a Portola Parkway signal or a fall on a broken parking-lot curb can still lead to weeks of physical therapy. No case is too small to call.

Foothill Ranch Injury FAQs

Is Foothill Ranch its own city?

No. It’s a neighborhood of Lake Forest. That’s why a crash on a Foothill Ranch street is usually handled by Lake Forest Police Services (the Orange County Sheriff), not a separate police department.

Who handles a crash on the 241 near Portola Parkway?

On the toll road itself, the CHP Capistrano Area office. Once you’re on Portola Parkway or another city street, it’s usually Lake Forest Police Services.

I was hurt on a Whiting Ranch trail. Can I make a claim?

It depends on what happened. A fall on your own usually isn’t a claim. But if another rider hit you, or an unsafe condition caused your injury, you may have options. Claims involving public land have short deadlines.

How long does it take to get a Sheriff’s crash report?

The Sheriff’s Department says reports usually take 7 to 10 days to be finalized. Call Records at (714) 834-6454 before you request yours.

What does it cost to talk to you?

Nothing. The consultation is free.
