Coto de Caza is an unincorporated community in the foothills of southeast Orange County, next to Rancho Santa Margarita, Trabuco Canyon and Ladera Ranch (ZIP code 92679). Tafreshi Law Group helps injured people here from our Lake Forest office at 22600 Lambert St, Suite 1501 — a short drive via Antonio Parkway and Santa Margarita Parkway. We do not have a Coto de Caza office.

Much of daily driving still funnels onto the same corridors that serve Rancho Santa Margarita: Antonio Parkway, Santa Margarita Parkway, Plano Trabuco Road and the 241 Toll Road. Inside the community, Coto de Caza Drive and connecting private roads mix resident traffic with service and visitor trips. Curves, limited lighting on canyon connectors and wildlife crossings call for extra care on Live Oak Canyon Road and Trabuco Canyon Road.

Antonio Parkway and SR-241 Near Coto

Most Coto de Caza trips to the rest of South Orange County use the same two corridors that serve Rancho Santa Margarita: Antonio Parkway and SR-241 (Foothill Toll Road). On the 241, Exit 18 is Antonio Parkway. From that interchange, Antonio Parkway north leads toward Rancho Santa Margarita and Coto de Caza; Antonio south leads toward Tijeras Creek, Ladera Ranch and San Juan Capistrano. The next RSM exits northbound are Exit 19 (Santa Margarita Parkway) and Exit 20 (Los Alisos Boulevard).

What matters after a wreck is which roadway you were on and who wrote the report:

  • Public roads in unincorporated areas around Coto (Oso Parkway, Coto de Caza Drive outside the gates, and unincorporated stretches of Antonio Parkway) → the California Highway Patrol generally investigates traffic collisions. Inside Rancho Santa Margarita city limits, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department handles city streets under contract.
  • Private gated roads inside Coto de Caza → handling can differ; the Sheriff may respond and private security may also make a record. Ask which agency wrote the report.
  • SR-241, including traffic at the Antonio Parkway interchange → usually the California Highway Patrol (CHP Capistrano Area often covers this stretch of South County freeways).

Ramp meters, toll plazas/FasTrak lanes and short merge distances on the 241, plus multi-lane turns from Antonio into shopping and neighborhood entrances, are the kinds of places clients describe when they call. Save dashcam clips and note the nearest exit number or cross street. Call (949) 989-2511 or text (949) 776-8964 if you need help pulling the right report.

Who Investigates Crashes Near Coto

Unincorporated Coto de Caza is patrolled by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. Crashes on the 241 and other state highways are generally handled by the California Highway Patrol. Knowing which agency responded tells you where to request the collision report.

  • Sheriff report requests: Records (714) 834-6454; see OCSD report-request guidelines for email, mail and fee details.

Common Crash Patterns Around Coto de Caza

Busy roads in Coto de Caza include Antonio Parkway, Oso Parkway, Coto de Caza Drive and SR-241. Common crash patterns here: speeding and rear-end crashes on Antonio Parkway and Oso Parkway, merging crashes at the SR-241 toll road ramps, and cyclists and equestrians on rural stretches. If your crash happened on one of these roads, write down the nearest cross street or exit, and keep any dashcam or doorbell video before it is recorded over.

Insurance Questions After a Coto de Caza Crash

California uses pure comparative fault. That means you can usually still recover damages even if you were partly at fault, but your recovery is reduced by your share of fault. Insurance adjusters often try to push more of the blame onto the injured person, which is one reason to be careful with recorded statements.

  • The at-fault driver’s liability policy is usually the first source of payment for medical bills, lost income, and pain and suffering.
  • Your own uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage may apply if the other driver has no insurance, too little insurance, or drove away.
  • Medical payments (MedPay) coverage, if you bought it, can help with early medical bills regardless of fault.
  • Commercial, rideshare, or employer policies may apply if a work truck, delivery van, or Uber or Lyft driver was involved.

We can help you identify every policy that may apply, send the right preservation letters, and handle the adjusters while you focus on treatment. Call (949) 989-2511 or text (949) 776-8964 — 24/7.

What a Claim Can Include

Depending on the facts, a personal injury claim may include past and future medical expenses, lost wages and reduced earning capacity, property damage, and non-economic damages such as pain, emotional distress, and loss of enjoyment of life. We cannot promise any amount or outcome; the value of a case depends on the injuries, the evidence, the available insurance, and many other factors.

Oso Parkway, Coto de Caza Drive and Gated-Community Crashes

Most traffic into Coto de Caza uses Coto de Caza Drive off Oso Parkway and the gate entries near Antonio Parkway. Crashes on Oso Parkway and Antonio are public-road crashes. Inside the gates, roads are private, but a crash there is still a California injury claim: the Sheriff can respond, auto insurance still applies, and an HOA or contractor may share responsibility if a hazard such as a hidden curb, broken lighting or overgrown landscaping contributed.

Neighboring canyon communities: Rancho Santa Margarita and Trabuco Canyon share the same roads, the same Sheriff and CHP split, and the same nearest TLG office. Read our Antonio Parkway & 241 Toll Road accident guide for the corridor that ties them together. Our Lake Forest office: 22600 Lambert St, Ste 1501, Lake Forest, CA 92630, is the closest TLG office — call (949) 989-2511 or text (949) 776-8964.

Coto de Caza Injury FAQs

Does Coto de Caza’s HOA matter if I was hurt inside the gates?

Sometimes. The driver’s insurance is usually first in line. If a road, sidewalk or common-area hazard helped cause the injury, the association or a maintenance contractor may also be responsible under California premises-liability rules.

Do you have an office in Coto de Caza?

No. Lake Forest (Lambert St, Ste 1501) is our closest Orange County office. Fountain Valley and Riverside are also available.

I crashed at Antonio Parkway and the 241. Who has the report?

If the collision was on SR-241 or the interchange ramps, start with CHP. If it was on Antonio Parkway itself (surface street), start with the Sheriff. We can help you read the incident number and order the right file.

Who investigates crashes inside Coto?

It depends. Coto’s roads inside the gates are private, so handling can differ: the Orange County Sheriff’s Department may respond, and private security may also keep a record. On public roads in unincorporated areas, including the 241, the CHP generally investigates traffic collisions. Ask which agency wrote the report.
