What does "policy limits" mean?

Every auto insurance policy has a limit on what the insurance company will pay for an injury claim, called the policy limit. A policy-limits settlement means the insurer paid the full amount available under the at-fault driver's policy. When a policy limit is not enough to cover your losses, other sources may be available, such as your own uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage. We look for every source of coverage in each case.
