Thermal and Mecca Personal Injury Lawyer
Thermal and Mecca are unincorporated farm towns at the low end of the Coachella Valley. Thermal began in 1910 as a Southern Pacific railroad camp called Kokell, and sits 138 feet below sea level. Mecca, first called Walters, followed in 1915 on the north shore of the Salton Sea. In the 2020 Census, Thermal had 2,676 residents and Mecca had 8,219. Mecca also holds a heat record: 126°F, reached in September 1950 and June 1990.

Truck Routes Through Farm Country
State Route 86 and Highway 111 are the main corridors here. Both serve as fruit-shipping and international trucking routes linking the Imperial Valley and the border to Interstate 10 in Indio. Along these roads you’ll find:
- Big rigs and produce trucks moving between fields, packing houses and the freeway.
- Farm equipment entering and leaving fields on two-lane stretches.

- Airport Boulevard (formerly Avenue 56), which runs past Jacqueline Cochran Regional Airport, about 1.6 miles southwest of Thermal.

Who Takes the Report
Because Thermal and Mecca aren’t cities, there’s no city police department. Local roads are patrolled by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Thermal Station, 86625 Airport Boulevard, Thermal. On SR-86, Highway 111 and I-10, the CHP Indio Area office usually takes the report: 79650 Varner Road, Indio, (760) 772-5300. CHP reports cost $10 for 1 to 25 pages.

- JFK Memorial Hospital, 47111 Monroe Street, Indio: 24/7 emergency care and a Level IV trauma center.
- Desert Regional Medical Center, Palm Springs: the valley’s only Level I trauma center.
Where Your Case Is Filed
Under the Riverside Superior Court’s civil filing order (effective August 1, 2026), cases from Thermal (92274, 92275) and Mecca (92254) go to the Palm Springs Courthouse, 3255 E. Tahquitz Canyon Way, roughly 30 miles away. Most injury lawsuits must be filed within two years. If Caltrans or the county may be at fault, for example for a road defect, a written claim is usually due within six months.
