When you need a Fountain Valley personal injury lawyer, it helps to work with someone who’s right here in town. One of our Orange County offices is at 18837 Brookhurst Street, just north of Garfield Avenue, so we know the streets, the traffic and the agencies you’ll be dealing with after an injury.

Fountain Valley is a quiet, family-centered city of about 56,600 people, but it sits between two of the busiest freeways in Southern California and is crossed by wide arterial streets that carry traffic from Huntington Beach, Costa Mesa, Santa Ana and Westminster. That mix shapes the kinds of injury cases we see.

Where Crashes Happen in Fountain Valley

According to the Fountain Valley Police Department, more than 100,000 vehicles travel the city’s 145 miles of streets every day. Several corridors carry most of that load:

  • The I-405 corridor. The San Diego Freeway cuts across the city. OCTA’s I-405 Improvement Project, which opened in December 2023, added one general-purpose lane in each direction between Euclid Street in Fountain Valley and I-605, plus the 405 Express Lanes. Express-lane access points include Magnolia Street/Warner Avenue, so merging traffic is part of everyday driving here.
  • Brookhurst Street, Euclid Street and Magnolia Street. These north-south arterials connect the 405 and the 22 to Huntington Beach and the coast. They are lined with shopping centers, driveways and bus stops.
  • Warner Avenue, Talbert Avenue, Edinger Avenue, Slater Avenue and Ellis Avenue. The east-west streets run past schools, Mile Square Park and the city’s two hospitals. People walking, biking and driving all share these streets.

What state data shows

The California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) compares cities of similar size; a ranking of 1 is the worst. In 2023, OTS counted 229 people killed or injured in Fountain Valley crashes. The city ranked 20th of 103 similar cities for speed-related injury crashes (44) and 42nd of 103 for injured or killed bicyclists (18). For bicyclists under 15, it ranked 11th of 103. Police made 135 DUI arrests that year.

In 2022, the picture was worse: OTS counted 409 people killed or injured, and Fountain Valley ranked 3rd of 104 similar cities for pedestrians age 65 and older who were killed or injured.

Recent local concerns

Pedestrian safety has stayed in the news in 2026. In January, a pedestrian was killed at Warner Avenue and Newhope Street. MyNewsLA reported that police booked the driver on suspicion of DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter. Those are allegations, not findings. In March, the FVPD Traffic Bureau and Cypress police ran a pedestrian-safety operation on Ellis and Talbert avenues between Magnolia and Newland streets. According to North OC Pulse, officers issued 38 citations, most for crosswalk violations.

If you or a family member was hurt while walking, see our guide to pedestrian right-of-way laws in California and our pedestrian accident page. Local Agencies You May Deal With

Police reports. Fountain Valley has its own police department, headquartered at 10200 Slater Avenue. Its Traffic Bureau investigates collisions on city streets and runs DUI checkpoints and saturation patrols. Crashes on the 405 are generally handled by the California Highway Patrol instead. Knowing which agency wrote your report is the first step to getting a copy.

Hospitals. Fountain Valley has two hospitals with emergency departments listed by the Orange County Health Care Agency: UCI Health – Fountain Valley at 17100 Euclid Street (formerly Fountain Valley Regional Hospital) and Orange Coast Memorial Medical Center at 9920 Talbert Avenue. People with the most serious injuries may be taken to one of the county’s designated trauma centers, such as UCI Health – Orange. Your medical records from these visits are key evidence in any claim.

The courthouse. If a case needs to be filed in Orange County Superior Court, injury lawsuits are generally heard at the Central Justice Center, 700 Civic Center Drive West, Santa Ana. Limited civil cases ($35,000 or less) and unlimited civil cases are both heard there. Most claims settle without a trial, but it’s important to work with a lawyer who is ready to file when needed.

What to Do After an Injury in Fountain Valley

  1. Get medical care, even if you feel okay. Some injuries show up hours or days later.
  2. Call the right agency: FVPD for city streets and CHP for the 405. Ask for the report number.
  3. Photograph everything, including vehicles, the intersection, signals, crosswalks and your injuries.
  4. Collect witness contact information. Look for nearby businesses that may have video, and ask them soon, because footage is often recorded over.
  5. Be careful with insurance adjusters. Read our tips on dealing with insurance adjusters.
  6. Watch the deadlines. Most injury lawsuits must be filed within two years. A claim against a city, the county or Caltrans usually must be presented within six months. See the statute of limitations for car accidents in California.
  7. Talk to a Fountain Valley personal injury lawyer before you sign a release.
